What do the Ten Courts of Hell, the Statue of Liberty, some colorful animated dragons and large sumo wrestlers have in common? Well you must be at Haw Par Villa in beautiful Singapore. The park contains over 1,000 statues depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, folklore, legends, history and illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism.
You could easily spend three hours at Haw Par Villa, or, depending on your level of interest, just 30 minutes. I enjoyed wandering around the Ten Courts of Hell exhibition. The Singapore Tourism Board has created some ‘magical’ yet scary displays of various punishments that may be delivered to you if your life on earth does not quite live up to the expectations of the gods. You are dazzled by the display of colors and there are numerous photographic opportunities.
Around the park you will see brightly painted dragons, a cave painted in luminous blue, a statue of sumo wrestlers and wise men in various poses. Even the Statue of Liberty makes an appearance in an eclectic collection of over-the-top colorful displays designed to entertain young and old.
So if you are looking for things to do in Singapore, consider a visit to Haw Par Villa. I visited on an organized day tour around Singapore, though you could quite easily arrange to visit the site yourself. There is lots of parking and the Haw Par Villa MRT Station is right there.
