Fosshotel Husavik, Iceland – Whale-watching Whistlestop

Welcome to Husavik in northern Iceland, where, during summer, you can see clearly at all hours of the day. I stayed at Fosshotel Husavik for the nights of 25 and 26 June 2017. The hotel is in a lovely part of northern Iceland. I really enjoyed my visit to Husavik and all the activities around the area. The hotel is centrally located, within walking distance to the whale-watching tours and the nearby harbor. The hotel is obviously geared towards mass tourism with many rooms and a large dining area in the hotel.

There is not a great deal of parking outside the hotel when it is busy. There are around 25 parking slots in front of the hotel and to the side of the breakfast area.  However, beyond that you have to park in front of a private house further up the road or in a side street.  There is not much, however, that the hotel can do about this.

The hotel is large and expansive. My room on the top floor had great views over the sea and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.  With the midnight sun shining brightly through my window, even at 3AM (is that then still a midnight sun?), I was presented with continually lovely views over the town towards the sea.

The room is large and cozy and the bathroom is adequate, though, like many of the hotels in Iceland, there is very little room (shelf space) in the bathroom onto which to unpack your toiletries.

I had dinner in the hotel. My hamburger was tasty and well presented. The staff are friendly. The breakfast selection was good, and the coffee excellent. The breakfast area was always full given the large number of hotel guests.

A funny story from my visit to Fosshotel Husavik: on the final morning of my stay, my hands were full with the breakfast plate yet I still wanted coffee. What I did was put the saucer into the back pocket of my jeans and just carried the cup of coffee. About two hours later, and 100 kilometers further to the west, I found the saucer still in my pocket. What I did later in my travels around the ring-road was balance the saucer on one of the cairns along the west coast, and left a few Iceland coins in the saucer. So if you are ever on the west coast of Iceland, in a truly remote spot, and you find a saucer with some coins on it, that could very well be the saucer that I accidently borrowed from Fosshotel Husavik.

Would I recommend this hotel? Yes, the hotel is ideally situated in Husavik.  The rooms are great, the staff are friendly and the general décor is welcoming. While in the area, do yourself a favor and do a whale-watching tour – we were lucky to enjoy a beautiful sunny day on our visit. I did the whale-watching tour with North Sailing.  In addition, visit the hot springs in Mývatn – you will not be disappointed.
