Anantara Angkor Resort – A Haven in Siem Reap

What’s not to love about the fascinating town of Siem Reap in Cambodia, with its ancient history and magnificent old temples? I stayed at the Anantara Angkor Resort and Spa for the nights of 15 to 18 May 2015. The resort was really quiet when I was there. I literally saw around eight other guests in total for the entire time I was there. The resort is far from the Angkor temples, say 25 minutes to Angkor Wat. It’s around 12 minutes by tuk-tuk to the Night Market. With the resort being so quiet I opted to have dinner in the Night Market each night rather than try their wonderful looking restaurants.

The onsite breakfast was an a-la-carte selection process, no buffet, which makes sense given the few guests. The resort is nice and the rooms comfortable. I was loaned a local mobile ‘phone for the duration of my stay in case I needed to call the hotel or the tuk-tuk driver – that’s a useful extra service that I have not seen elsewhere.

I opted for a private tour to the temples on each of my three days. This encompassed just the driving to and from the temples, not a guided tour of each – this is the way that I prefer to travel. This worked very well in that I was able to direct the tuk-tuk driver to the temples that I was interested in seeing. The resort will have excellent drivers who will speak good English, and they will be knowledgeable about the location of the temples and their main points. They will also show you the best angles from which to takes photo’s. The daily cost for the private tour was around USD 30 inclusive of taxes and service charge, well worth that little bit extra for the convenience of choosing the exact route that you prefer, the temples in which you are interested and the cold towels and water provided after each temple.

Overall the resort is very nice, perhaps a little far from town if I was to visit the Temples of Angkor again. But certainly it should be on your list of options when choosing a resort at which to stay in Siem Reap. I look forward to a return visit one day in the not too distant future.
