Having safely navigated to the starting point for the Brjanslaekur to Stykkisholmur ferry, and driven aboard the ferry without crashing my rental car into the ocean, it was time to relax and enjoy the two and a half hour cruise that would mean my trip around the Iceland ring-road was one day closer to being over.
Having taken the chance to relax and enjoy the stunning Iceland weather from the top deck of the ferry, stopping at one point to embark further passengers, we arrived to Stykkisholmur towards the late afternoon.
I stayed at Hotel Egilsen in Iceland for the night of 1 July 2017. Perfectly located right next to the port in Stykkisholmur, you are close to shops and restaurants. You are literally one minute away from the hotel when the boat docks after having crossed the water from Brjánslækur.
The hotel is family owned and operated and is well taken care of. Parking is right outside the hotel in a parking lot that can accommodate approximately 14 cars. I stayed in Room 5, apparently the best room in the hotel. The room had a great view over to the harbor. The rooms are reasonably small yet comfortable. Even the shower, unlike other showers in Iceland, was of a reasonable size. And this is the ONLY hotel in Iceland where they offer decent toiletries – L’Occitane if I remember correctly.
I walked from the hotel to the nearest restaurant, based on the recommendation of the lady at reception. There are really only two decent restaurants in town apparently.
Breakfast – what a treat. Given that the hotel is family owned and operated and reasonably small, you are given a choice of breakfast time, from as early as 7AM. I chose the earliest possible time to make a quick start back to Reykjavik. I was offered a wonderful selection of eggs, coffee, yoghurt and a smoothie. What a wonderfully talented chef a lady named Berglind is. She made the most delicious scrambled eggs one could imagine. She is a credit to the hotel with her cooking and her guest relations.
Would I recommend Hotel Egilsen? Yes, definitely. For its central location and overall charm this is the ideal hotel for a few nights in Stykkisholmur. While in Stykkisholmur, consider visiting the Stykkishólmskirkja Church, a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
