My day started with an amazing sunrise at the Malarhorn Guesthouse on the north-west coast of Iceland.
I stayed at Hotel Isafjordur for the night of 29 June 2017. Honestly, this hotel is not great by any stretch of the imagination. As you walk from the parking lot to the hotel you go past a horrible smelling large garbage container, like you see on the back of garbage trucks.
The reception area of the hotel is reasonably clean and tidy, as is the dining area close to reception. The receptionists were friendly and the older lady went out of her way to assist with the complimentary bottle of wine that had been arranged by Hofsstadir Guesthouse following my less than acceptable experience at their lodge. She arranged the wine, explained the situation to the lady in the restaurant and ensured that this part of my stay was handled efficiently.
The elevator to the rooms is cramped and miserable, perhaps dating from the 1960s. The passage outside the room is dark and the carpets are dirty. The room itself, however, is nice and clean. It is perfectly acceptable for a new nights’ stay.
Parking is quite far from the hotel, in a large parking lot. This requires you having the carry your heavy luggage from the car to the room. I had dinner in the restaurant. It is obviously very popular as it was full when I visited. The food was good as well as the service. Breakfast was basic but acceptable.
Other things to do in the area: get to the hotel by 1PM and book yourself an afternoon tour to Vigur. What a fascinating island, if you don’t mind being attacked by Arctic terns. Vigur has the only windmill in Iceland and the smallest post office in Europe, or so they say. Find Vigur on Google Maps.
Would I recommend this hotel? No. You can do substantially better in Isafjordur. There are many hotels from which to choose. You can safely avoid Hotel Isafjordur without any fear that you are missing out. Go somewhere else unless there are no rooms available elsewhere. If you really want to go to this hotel, find Hotel Isafjordur on Google Maps. Our video review from our afternoon tour to Vigur Island may be found on the Two Passports Packed YouTube channel.
I arranged my vacation to Iceland with Nordic Visitor. This is not an affiliate link and I will not receive a commission if you arrange your own tour through them. This link is provided for your reference and also as a gesture of goodwill following the excellent work that Nordic Visitor did in arranging my fantastic vacation to Iceland.
