WooHoo, it’s off to Mauritius for a first-time visit, and the chance to add country number 51 to my list of destinations. Choosing a place to stay for four weeks was a challenge, especially trying to balance the needs and expectations of six people. But in the end I chose Marguery Villas which was a reasonably good choice as you can read below. You can find Marguery Villas on Google Maps here.
We stayed in a Deluxe Pool Villa for 28 nights, from 30 April to 27 May 2022. Overall, the stay was excellent. The staff are on the ball and took care of all requirements as they occurred. The villa is a lovely 3-bedroom, 2-storey villa with some lovely views over towards the surrounding mountain. If you take a walk early in the morning you will enjoy the peace and quiet and have amazing views over the ocean.
Marguery Villas offers a communal pool area, gym, concierge, etc. area. We did not have a need to use these facilities during our stay but the facilities are excellent.
The villa itself is lovely. We particularly enjoyed the outside sitting area. We had breakfast and dinner outside every day. The pool is a lovely addition to the villa and was used almost every day. All you could ever need is included in the villa. We stocked the fridge / freezer as soon as we arrived. All the plates, cutlery, dishes, etc. are made available to you and you have complete flexibility as to how you would like to enjoy your vacation. The washing machine / dryer is a useful addition as is the dishwasher. You pretty much have all you need for an extended vacation in Mauritius.
The main room downstairs has a lovely big bathroom, standalone bath and shower and even an outside shower. It has a large dressing room and safe and is plenty big enough for your vacation requirements. The two rooms upstairs have large showers, but no baths, and two single beds pushed together to form one double bed. All in all the villa was really comfortable.
What I enjoyed was the proximity to the local shopping center within walking distance of the villa. Here you can go and browse the shops, grab your morning coffee and pastry or head out to dinner in the evening. There is a large supermarket within a 3-minute drive of the villa where you can get your basic requirements, although we found the Super-U about seven minutes from the villa more upmarket. Also, about five minutes down the road is the starting point for the day cruises around the south-west side of the island.
Unfortunately Marguery Villas is way down in the south-west of the island, so much so that it takes a minimum of 40 minutes to get to Port Louis. If you leave at the wrong time of the day and you catch the morning commute into Port Louis, you are stuck in single-lane traffic that is a real pain. I played golf at Anahita Golf & Spa Resort and Ile Aux Cerfs Golf Club and the drive on each day to reach the course was well over two hours. I also played golf at Heritage Golf Club but that drive, since the course is in the south of the island, was around 35 minutes. My separate review of the golf courses at which I played in Mauritius, and how I selected the ones to play, may be found here.
Would I stay at Marguery Villas again if I visited Mauritius? Most likely not, unfortunately. But only because of the long distances that are required in order to visit anywhere on the island. If you intend to visit Mauritius and have a long family vacation in and around the southern part of the island then absolutely, Marguery Villas could be your choice. Overall the accommodation is excellent and the staff super friendly but the driving distances and clogged roads to get to anywhere meaningful on the island make it a difficult choice as to whether I would choose Marguery Villas again.
OK Charles, so where would you stay? If I was to visit Mauritius again, I would choose to stay closer to Port Louis, more in the center of the island, on the west coast. Otherwise the north-west coast towards Grand Baie or the east coast, over towards Blue Bay, where you will find some excellent beaches and beautiful scenery.
