Roman Theater of Medellin: centuries of history in Spain

Welcome to centuries of Roman history. Along the road between Madrid and Seville, how about taking a detour to the historical Roman Theater of Medellin? In the Spanish town of Medellín, you will find a lovely Roman theater, known in Spanish as the Teatro Romano De Medellín. Perched on a hill, you will enjoy views of the surrounding countryside as you wander through centuries of Roman history.

Archaeological excavation at the site started in 1969 and the theater was eventually unearthed when excavations resumed in 2007. The theater is built on a hillside between a medieval castle and a church built on the foundation of an ancient Roman temple and gives a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

To visit the theater, follow the directions from Google Maps here. Upon arrival you will find plenty of parking. Make your way to the museum where you will be asked to pay a three euro entry fee per person. That will give you access to the museum which showcases various items excavated from the site. Unless you are really interested in these artifacts, a visit of around 10 minutes to the museum should be fine.

Make your way out of the museum into the Roman theater. The person who collected your entry fee to the museum will open the gate for you at the start of your visit and he will let you out when you have finished exploring. You could easily spend an hour wandering around the site, exploring various passages and climbing the stairs to get the best views over the surrounding countryside. Make sure that you go right to the top as that will give you the best views not only of the Roman theater itself but all the way into the valley below.

For anyone interested in Roman history, this site is a must visit, even if for only a short while on your drive between Madrid and Seville. Further information may be found here.
