After visiting the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex first thing in the morning, your second stop for the day is likely to be Turtle Rock in the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park.
Located just 55 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, within the stunning landscapes of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Turtle Rock, locally known as Melkhii Khad, is one of Mongolia’s most famous natural landmarks. This massive granite formation resembles a giant turtle resting in the grasslands, earning it its name and making it a favorite destination for both locals and travelers.

Shaped over millions of years by wind and weather erosion, Turtle Rock is an excellent example of Mongolia’s unique geology. Standing about 24 meters high, it offers an impressive backdrop for photos and is surrounded by the park’s breathtaking scenery of rolling hills, alpine forests and wide-open valleys.
Visitors can easily explore the area on foot, and, like I did, many combine a stop at Turtle Rock with a visit to the nearby Aryabal Meditation Temple, a serene Buddhist retreat perched on a hilltop. From there, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Terelj’s landscapes, making it a perfect spot for reflection and photography.
Terelj National Park is also a hub for outdoor activities. Depending on the season, travelers can go horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing or even dog sledding. The region is dotted with traditional Mongolian ger camps, allowing visitors to experience authentic nomadic hospitality.
After my visit to the Aryabal Meditation Temple, I returned to my hotel near Turtle Rock. I wanted to try and walk around Turtle Rock so I headed off to the right of the rock and followed the path to the side. Unfortunately, the path does not go around the rock so I returned to its base. I then headed out for a walk in the nearby mountains, specifically with the intention of placing a time capsule, which I did, to be found by future generations.

Because of its proximity to Ulaanbaatar, Turtle Rock is often included in day trips or weekend getaways from the capital. Whether you’re drawn by the stunning landscapes, the rich cultural experiences or simply the chance to see this iconic formation up close, Turtle Rock is an unmissable highlight of any journey through Mongolia.

My visit to Mongolia, outside of the capital, was coordinated by Molomjamts Naranzul, someone who I now consider a good friend. His Instagram profile may be found here, from where contact may be started by direct message.
