Wings Villas Phuket – Close but no cigar

Head about 25km south from the Phuket International Airport and you will arrive at Wings Villas Phuket. This was my second visit to Wings Phuket with the first one having been in October 2016. Arriving to the villas you will be greeted by a security guard, on duty 24/7, to make sure that you are well taken care of, or, in our case, to check us in after our late arrival from the airport.

For this vacation I booked a 3-bedroom pool villa, bigger than the 2-bedroom pool villa that I booked for our previous vacation. My mom settled for the main room, her friend for the adjoining bedroom while Arlyn and I took the separate bedroom on the other side of the pool.

Let’s start off with the positives of Wings Phuket. The villa is in a lovely quiet location and you can hear nothing around you at night. If you are looking for a really nice, quiet, peaceful vacation then Wings Phuket could be ideal for you. The pool is lovely and well taken care of. The villas are close to Laguna Phuket, literally just around the corner, with shops, restaurants, massage parlors and other tourist attractions almost on your doorstep. The maid service is excellent and the villa is well taken care of each day. The villa has an adequate supply of household items and cutlery to make it your home-from-home while based in Phuket.

Now some negatives: unfortunately the villas are old and seriously lacking in maintenance. The kitchen drawers in our villa were falling apart, and the front panel of the one drawer fell off when we opened it. Also the scissors were literally just stuck together so that when you used them they fell apart. As I remembered from our visit to the 2-bedroom villa, the furniture is really uncomfortable. It is too hard to be of practical use, the sofa is uncomfortable and the rocking chairs are too hard. For a 3-bedroom villa there was only two sun loungers and two chairs around the small table. What we had to do was take the very hard chairs from inside the rooms and place them outside, sometimes in the rain, so that four persons could sit around the small table. Surely it would make sense to have the same number of chairs as the number of people expected to be staying in the villa?

The third bedroom, across the other side of the pool, is really small as to almost be impractical. When suitcases, gadgets and clothes are around the room, there is honestly very little space in the bedroom. Given that this was the ‘main’ bedroom selected by Arlyn and me, I would have expected the room to be much larger.

Finally, the doors to the villa are so small and narrow as to be impractical. I fail to understand how they can be regarded as functional.

The Bottom Line: would I choose to stay at Wings Villas Phuket for a third time if I was to return to Phuket? Unfortunately, no, I would choose to stay elsewhere. Despite the lovely quiet surroundings, the lovely pool and the excellent maid service, these factors are outweighed by the lack of comfort from the small doors, the severe lack of maintenance and the small size of the room in which we chose to stay. What I highly recommend is that management upgrade the property: I doubt that the costs will be that much to take the villa from acceptable to great, thereby securing a greater number of return visitors.
