The Khorfakkan Amphitheater – Roman Magic in the UAE?

“WOW, what’s that? A Roman amphitheater right along the corniche in Khorfakkan? That’s amazing”, I thought as I drove along the beachfront looking for something to do on one of the days of my staycation in the beautiful emirate of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. I had just stumbled across the Khorfakkan Amphitheater.

Before stumbling across the amphitheater, in the emirate of Sharjah, as I drove along the corniche, I had no idea that it was even there. But it looked so impressive that I could not help being intrigued at the chance to visit, especially since parking was freely available on the street near the amphitheater.

What I suggest you do is park where you can and plan to spend around 45 minutes exploring the site. Despite the oppressive summer heat, which for me is not an issue, I walked the 200 meters or so from the parking spot to the entry gate to the amphitheater. The amphitheater was in the final stages of being built when I visited, so I was unable to access the site beyond the security barriers. But I could certainly experience the magnificence of the 1,700 square meter site and took some great photo’s.

Now that the amphitheater is open to the public, after my visit, I look forward to returning one day soon and experiencing, with the 3,499 other spectators, how it must have felt, in the days of ancient Rome, to attend a gathering of this size. Just be guaranteed that there will be no gladiators this time around, with performances restricted to music and other forms of non-lethal entertainment.

After your visit to the amphitheater, take a quick stroll over to the beautiful waterfall. You may even have enough spray to cool you down after being in the sun for so long. Your visit to the Khorfakkan Amphitheater and Waterfall will be one of the highlights of your visit to Sharjah, close to Fujairah. Find the amphitheater on Google Maps here.
