Sriwilai Sukhothai Resort & Spa: Chilled Luxury near Historical Park

Welcome to the secluded haven of Sriwilai Sukhothai Resort & Spa. For my second visit to Sukhothai, I wanted to try a different hotel from the ones at which I stayed previously, namely Legendha Sukhothai Hotel and Baan Suk Sukhothai.

I previously tried to have dinner at Sriwilai but I got confused between the breakfast restaurant and the dinner restaurant, not realizing that there are two different restaurants onsite. So while I visited the hotel previously, this was my first time staying at the resort. I stayed at Sriwilai twice during this trip, once for one-night on the drive to Chiang Mai and then for two nights on the drive back to Hua Hin.

Set in a quiet gardens, with beautiful views of Wat Chedi Sung, and stunning views over the pool and into the rice fields, Sriwilai Sukhothai Resort & Spa offers a perfect chance to relax after a long day exploring the various sites for which you came to Sukhothai. The word ‘Sukhothai’ originates from two words, namely ‘Suk’ and ‘Uthai’, meaning ‘Dawn of Happiness’. As you sit on your porch facing the rice fields, enjoying your morning coffee, you will experience another type of dawn of happiness before walking past the glorious swimming pool on your way to breakfast.

The breakfast restaurant is close to the reception area, in lovely grounds overlooking Wat Chedi Sung. With the egg selection outside and a good array of Thai food, you will first venture inside for your morning cappuccino. To be quite honest, the choice for breakfast is rather limited and quite disappointing. But you will be able to find some nice yoghurt, a decent selection of bread and fresh fruit juices as you await your second cup of coffee for the morning. Sitting in the quiet garden, alongside lily ponds, is the perfect way to get your day started as you decide whether to venture into Sukhothai Historical Park or find some other activities to fill your day.

With three choices of rooms at Sriwilai, you are spoiled for choice as to which room you would like to choose. Choose a Sriwilai Suite, described on the Sriwilai Sukhothai Resort & Spa website as ‘Each of our stylish Suites, in its individual villa, offers a spacious bedroom with an en-suite bathroom designed with Thai Lanna–Sukhothai décor, conjuring the sense of tradition and romance. Our luxury villas … have their own private balcony overlooking the lotus pond and a spectacular view of the Sukhothai heritage ruins of Wat Chedi Sung and offers an enchanting view of sunset in its natural harmonic place. All of our Suites feature a modern bathtub, flat screen satellite TV, wireless internet access, air-conditioning and hot water. Tea and coffee making facilities, slippers, bathrobes and fully equipped bathroom amenities’.

Otherwise select between a Deluxe Room and a Superior Room. Whatever room type you select, you will enjoy a good night’s sleep, perhaps disturbed by the occasional hungry gecko trying to find his evening meal.

Consider visiting the onsite spa, called Soila Spa. Although we did not visit the spa, its location in the quiet gardens makes me believe that we missed out on a relaxing spa experience, steps away from the rooms. Other than spending the day at the pool, a visit to Soila Spa will ensure that your vacation in Sukhothai is as relaxing as it should be.

Perhaps a quiet day at the resort, alongside the large pool, is your idea of the perfect way to spend your day in Sukhothai? The pool is large and has fantastic views over the rice fields. The perfect time to enjoy the pool, perhaps paired with an evening cocktail, is around sunset. Facing west, the pool is ideally positioned for you to lounge in the pool or on the sun loungers as you wind down your busy, or not so busy, day in Sukhothai.

After a long day exploring Sukhothai, including Wat Si Chum and the Sukhothai Historical Park, it was time for a visit to the pool before heading to the room and the outside balcony, overlooking either the grounds of the hotel or the rice fields, for a sundowner. After sunset, head to the ‘dinner’ restaurant, alongside the pool for a good selection of Western and Thai dishes. The restaurant is usually quite busy, creating a lovely ambience as you wind down the evening having enjoyed your day in the fascinating historical Thai capital.

Despite a few challenges that could easily be addressed, that would take the hotel from good to great, I was pleased to discover Sriwilai Sukhothai Resort & Spa on booking.com and it would be my Number 1 choice, of the three hotels at which I have stayed, when I am next in Sukhothai. I hope that you will do the same. Otherwise, consider one of the other hotels in Sukhothai, as linked or using the box below.

If you are staying longer in Sukhothai, you may want to explore nearby attractions, engage in cycling tours, or participating in local markets and cultural events to experience the lifestyle of Sukhothai.
